Weird Stays and Model Trains

Hello!

Quick note! I am very proud of my brother who has been ALL OVER THE DANG PLACE promoting "Turtles All the Way Down," a movie adapted from his book "Turtles All the Way Down." You can hear him on the Colin and Samir podcast, you can watch him build a puzzle with Karen Kavett, and in this Buzzfeed video where I learned that DAVIS IS AUSTRALIAN.

I'm sure there will be more soon. It's been 10 years since "The Fault in Our Stars" came out in theaters and that was...a weird experience. I mean, despite being about teens with cancer, it did extremely, ludicrously well. That movie has probably been watched by more than a hundred million people which is just WEIRD. That's like how many views a Mr. Beast video gets but it's TWO HOURS LONG and people had to PAY TO WATCH IT!

I can't believe John and I have been so lucky to have such exceptional experiences at the beginning of an era of YouTube and the end of an era of movies. Now we are in a different era of movies, but the movies are still often very good! "Turtles All the Way Down" has just been released into a world that is very different from 2014. But I just watched it yesterday and it is so lovely and touching. It is, of course, siloed (on Max) but at least it's available in lots of places all over the world. It's going to have a very different life than TFIOS (which I might argue is a net positive for the Green bros...that was intense), but it's over 90% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and people are loving it! There's lots of other good stuff on Max and I think you should watch it!!

This Week in Stuff

  • The Turtles All the Way Down movie is streaming NOW on Max! You can check out the trailer if you haven’t already.

  • Have you ever wanted to sleep in a hotel built over a highway? Matt Shearer, a WBZ NewsRadio reporter, stayed there to show us what it’s like (and teach us about air rights). Honestly, it didn’t seem too bad!

  • There’s a YouTube channel dedicated to videos of cats interacting with model trains. As you would expect, there are frequent cat-shaped railroad disturbances.

  • Airbnb built a real-life “Up” house, with 8,000 balloons, and you can apply to be a guest there. And yes, it can actually be suspended in the sky.

  • Alveus Sanctuary, a sanctuary for non-releasable animals in Texas, has a 24/7 Twitch stream where you can see what the animals are up to.

Emissions of substances that deplete the ozone layer have fallen by more than 99% since 1989

Esteban Ortiz-Ospina

In 1987, countries around the world signed the Montreal Protocol to reduce emissions of ozone-depleting substances — such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and halon gases used in refrigerators, deodorants, and other industrial processes.

This chart shows that since the Montreal agreement entered into force in 1989, global emissions of ozone-depleting substances have fallen by more than 99% as manufacturers have substituted them for less harmful alternatives.

The Montreal Protocol is one of the most successful international agreements to date.

Springtime Vibes

Last week, we ended the newsletter by asking for “springtime vibes” and we got lots of great submissions! It was nice to see what people associate with spring, and yes, it was mostly flowers (and we aren’t complaining). If it’s not currently spring where you are, you have lots to look forward to and we hope this brings a little life to your day.
